Official packaging for cigarettes approved

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the introduction of officially certified packaging for tobacco products.

Accordingly two colours or black and white can be used in the tobacco packaging.

The new system will only allow the display of the brand name, product name, product quantity and information approved and made compulsory by the government such as health risk warnings, on the packaging.

The government is introducing the amendments with the motive of reducing the usage of tobacco.

According to data the usage of tobacco products by adult males in the country which was at 29% in 2011, had decreased to 24% by 2015.

The government’s objective is to reduce the overall percentage to 15% within the next 4 years.

The government accordingly estimated deaths caused by the usage of tobacco annually can eventually be decreased by around 6,000.
